PingProperties starts building work at Carnisse Veste in Barendrecht
23-12-2024
Following an intensive preparation of the redevelopment plans for Carnisse Veste shopping centre, last week PingProperties received the final permits from the municipality and so the revitalization of the shopping centre can now get underway. Ping is transforming the district shopping centre, covering around 16,000 m² GFA, into a modern daily convenience centre and has commissioned the building firm AKOR of Pijnacker to implement the plans. All the work will be done in phases to allow the shopping centre to remain open and accessible to the public during the entire renovation period. Work is expected to be completed after the summer next year.
The process of coordinating and obtaining approval for the work has been challenging. Bram Harding – Head of (Re)development at PingProperties: ’That’s why it might seem to visitors that not much has been happening recently in the shopping centre, but we have been continually working hard behind the scenes. We are therefore pleased that this phase has been concluded and everyone can now see that work is in progress’.
Redevelopment
Carnisse Veste is a district shopping centre comprising two levels and around 50 retail units. In recent years the upper level has struggled with declining footfall and more and more vacant units. The redevelopment includes a new travelator that will create a physical link between the two levels and the car park. It will make the shopping centre a unified whole and all shops will be accessible to visitors with just one shopping trolley. Apto Architects has drawn up the architectural design. An important element in the redevelopment is the arrival of discounter LIDL alongside the two existing full-service supermarkets Jumbo and Albert Heijn. This is something that is much needed as there are no discounters at all in Barendrecht-West.
For that reason, in 2022 PingProperties signed a long-term lease with LIDL for around 2,000 m2 GFA. LIDL will act as a crowd puller on the upper level, which will attract many more visitors and also benefit other tenants on this level. To make space for LIDL, seven existing shops will be moving to other units in the centre.
Sander Rovers – Investment Manager at PingProperties: ‘I look forward to seeing this project’s progress and the positive impact that the redevelopment of Carnisse Veste will have on the local community and the shopping centre as a whole.’
