Teijin Aramid moves into new head office.
Teijin Aramid, global leader in aramids, is moving into its new head office at Tivolilaan 50, on the former AKZO ENKA site in Arnhem. The head office of 5,000 m2 is housed within the skeleton of one of Teijin Aramid’s old laboratories. During recent months the building has been completely transformed by BAM for PingProperties into an inspiring head office. During the coming years, the former AkzoNobel-ENKA site will be developed into a multifunctional area combining homes, work and education. The move by Teijin Aramid into its new head office marks the completion of the first phase of this unique area development project.

Sustainability
The outdated laboratory has been transformed according to a design by APTO architects into a flexible and sustainable head office. It is a collaborative, but above all sustainable workplace that provides ample opportunities for innovation. The transformation involved the partial demolition of the building, stripping the remaining part down to the concrete shell, installing completely new systems and building a new, sustainable facade. The office, which Teijin Aramid has named T ONE, is equipped with the very latest climate and sustainability technology. Various facilities such as solar panels, heat pumps, water-saving taps, external sun blinds and heat recovery systems contribute to a small environmental footprint and energy label A+. Some of the granulate produced from the demolition of the laboratory has also been reused to pave the new parking spaces and access roads. Charging points for electric vehicles and bicycles, a restaurant serving local produce and a wall with 1,500 plants reduce Teijin Aramid’s environmental impact even more.

Peter ter Horst, CEO of Teijin Aramid: ‘I am extremely proud of the fantastic location, the splendid design and the sustainable construction of our new head office. It will be one of the greenest buildings in Arnhem, and its open character will give an extra boost to our organization’s innovation efforts. This move means that we are putting our sustainable values and innovative approach into practice more than ever.

Unique inner-city area development
The former industrial estate, located at Velperweg 76 in Arnhem, is the former AkzoNobel – ENKA site and consists of a range of commercial buildings and plots. Today, AkzoNobel, Nouryon and Teijin Aramid are based at the site. In 2021 the educational institution ROC Rijn IJssel will also move to the park. This unique location is in the heart of the city of Arnhem and is a major inner-city development project bringing together homes, work and education.

Alongside the construction of a new head office for Teijin Aramid, part of the site is also undergoing sustainable development on behalf of ROC Rijn IJssel for its ICT, engineering and laboratory technology education clusters and the creative industry. The third function (homes) will be developed between Velperweg and the Arnhem-Zutphen railway line, where housing developer BDP/Klokgroep, in consultation with future residents, will create a new residential district with respect for the area’s rich industrial history.
